Press release prepared by ASECAP
There is a significant increase in accidents involving personnel working on motorway who are vulnerable people.
These accidents mainly concern motorway patrol officers- but also all other workers that intervene on motorways for the safety of all (police, firemen, emergency services, towing companies).
They occur in most cases in the middle of the day, on sections offering good visibility, while the signaling devices of the intervention vehicles are active and very visible (rotating lights, luminous arrows on the roof of the vans, cones, etc.)
These accidents are in many cases the consequence of episodes of drowsiness or inattention from drivers whose are diverted from the road, by dangerous use of screens (smartphones, tablets, GPS, etc.).
Motorway companies warn of these risky behaviors that endanger the lives of patroller and drivers. They call for the mobilization of all actors for a change in behavior and awareness of the danger caused using screens.
A European day campaign
Road safety for staff working to ensure the safety of drivers on motorways is a major priority for road infrastructure operators.
Building on the 2023 ASECAP Road Safety days held earlier in March in Salzburg, acknowledging that among many means, getting to better know each other is key to improve mutual respect. The awareness can be reached by organising positive events like this one which ASECAP endorsed supporting the (S)He Works I Care initiative. This operation with growing success, has been already implemented in several countries in the last past years.
Ensuring the safety of patrollers through prevention and strengthening the link between them and drivers - among which professional drivers play a key role - is the red wire of the awareness campaign.
Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. - the concessionaire of the A4 Katowice-Krakow motorway - is a member of ASECAP.
At the beginning of 2023 the Company carried out a campaign "Hold the Wheel and Not Your Phone". The initiative aimed to raise awareness of the dangers of using smartphones while driving.
