Significant decreases in electricity consumption and CO2 emissions on the A4 motorway, section Katowice-Krakow
Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. - the concessionaire of the A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway - and VIA4 S.A. - the motorway operator - have achieved impressive results in the field of optimising the use of electricity and CO2 reduction. Electricity consumption on the A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway was 40% lower in September 2023 than in September 2022, and according to forecasts, throughout 2023 this decrease will amount to 35% compared to 2022. CO2 emissions in the three quarters of 2023 were 63% lower than in the corresponding period last year. These significant decreases in electricity consumption and CO2 emissions were possible thanks to a number of activities. Traditional lighting at toll plazas, motorway junctions, motorway maintenance circuits, office spaces, workshops and warehouses has been replaced with LED lamps. A two-stage system for changing lighting intensity depending on the level of traffic at motorway junctions has been implemented. Heating and air-conditioning devices inside toll collectors’ cabins at toll plazas were regulated and temperature control procedures have been introduced. Controlled switching off of specific groups of lights on motorway maintenance circuits and in parking lots at night has been initiated. An eco mode for air conditioners has been turned on and trainings have been conducted for their users. Radiator thermostats have been installed in all VIA4 rooms. 100% of electricity is purchased from ecological sources (biomass).
